Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2025:

An Authoritative Overview

Initiated in 2004 by the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), this campaign has since expanded to encompass a wide array of global stakeholders, including:

  • Government agencies

  • Private sector organizations

  • Non-profit entities

  • Educational institutions

Originally established to increase awareness of cyber threats and advocate for cybersecurity best practices, Cybersecurity Awareness Month has progressively expanded its scope to encompass multiple aspects of cybersecurity and engage diverse audiences.

This initiative represents a nationwide commitment to advancing online safety and underscores its vital importance in safeguarding families, businesses, and communities.

It provides information about the changing landscape of cyber threats and emphasizes the importance of ongoing attention to these issues.

Theme: “Stay Safe Online”

For 2025, the campaign theme is “Stay Safe Online.” This new focus centers on empowering everyone to take practical, everyday steps to safeguard their digital lives. Rather than just spotlighting cyber awareness once a year, the 2025 theme emphasizes that simple actions; at home, at work, and in the community, can make a meaningful difference in cybersecurity for all.

The campaign highlights four straightforward actions known as the “Core 4”:

  1. Create strong passwords and use a password manager.

  2. Enable multifactor authentication (MFA).

  3. Recognize and report scams.

  4. Keep your software updated.

This approach invites people of all skill levels to help improve internet safety.
